Good Restaurants in Hamburg or where to eat in Hamburg

This restaurant is by far our favourite in Hamburg: The Bok Restaurant in the Schanzenviertel. They have Japanese and Thai food mostly, and at a very good price. You can get there with the S-Bahn (regional train) and U-Bahn (metro) as well, look for the Sternchanze station.

But we did not find this place by ourselves. A friend of my wife who used to live here in Hamburg showed us around this neighbourhood a year and half ago, told us about this restaurant, the other two in the area and the story behind Wok. Looks like the Wok began as an Imbiss (roughly translated, a fast food stall or eatery), which is not the one in the photo.

The original is 4 0 5 streets away and it is in the semi subterranean lower part of a building. There you must order and eat standing and it is a little bit small. That's why we have never been there. It was so successful that they opened more and a little more sophisticated. Just a little. Currently there are 3 in the Schanzenviertel, one more in Altona and in some other places that I don't remember. However, we are very traditional and we always go to the one in the photo.

Now, be careful. Some, only some, dishes are spicy. They might tell you that it is mild spicy, but sometimes that means very. The best thing to do is to ask for your dish, when is the case, not to be spicy. I like spicy food, that's another reason why I am such a fan of this place. But last time we where there, I ordered a dish that was supposed to be mild and it was not. I did not care, as I normally put more chili on it, but for the average German, I am sure it would have been difficult to eat.

Another good point of Wok is that around 13:00, they put some fresh food in boxes outside for the Homeless people of the area. It is the first time I have seen this. And I did see some people coming to get the food.
