Karoviertel in Hamburg - first part

The Karoviertel begins, coming from the Schanzenviertel, from Marktstrasse

Around Karoviertel there is a Fleamarket (are there more Fleamarkets in Hamburg?)

I am back from France, it was a very very stressy weekend. I almost did not sleep on Thursday and I slept on the whole way from here to La Rochelle. We did have some time to walk through Paris a little bit, and to revive some old memories. But we are back in Hamburg, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. At least for me.

Today I am going to talk about the Karoviertel, another alternative area / neighborhood of Hamburg, just as Schanzenviertel. In fact, they are so close to each other, that if it would not be because the names change, you could not tell you are in different areas. The best option to visit the Karoviertel is to go there on a Saturday morning and start with the Flea market. Just next, there is an interesting bookshop with a relatively big selection of books in English, art books, architecture books, etc. In the building that houses the Flea Market there is an independent records house as well as restaurants, etc.

Walk then to where the Markstrasse starts, and you will see in the Karoviertel the characteristic signs of alternative areas in Germany: nice and stylised graffiti, stickers all over the place, alternative shops selling alternative clothes, shoes, furniture, etc; all kinds of street art, trendy coffee shops, etc. In fact, you might say the Karoviertel is more "IN" than the Schanzenviertel.

I took many photos in our visit to the Karoviertel, please come back tomorrow for the other posts. Or visit post two and three to get to now more about this alternative are of Hamburg.
