Elbe tunnel Hamburg (the tunnel under the river)

Old style design of the doors

Crossing the Elbe tunnel in Hamburg

Yesterday we decided to do a small bycicle tour around the Port of Hamburg. The weather was not that good, it was cold in fact. But what called my attention of the bike trip, was that we were going to go through the Elbe Tunnel. I did not know that such a place existed until some weeks ago. I had seen photos of the tunnel already, but I was really looking forward to it. Thinking on crossing the Elbe like that, really really excited me.

The entrance to the Elbe Tunnel (if you are on the side of Hamburg) is on the Landungsbrücken buildings. The tower with a sort of golden roof, is where the entrance to the Elbe tunnel is. I don't know how it is for cars, looks like cars can only drive in one direction and have to pay around 3 or 4 euro to cross. And in fact there is a bigger and newer tunnel somewhere else in Hamburg to cross the Elbe. But for pedestrians and bycicles crossing the Elbe Tunnel is free. And during the weekends is closed to autos.

You enter the building and you must take a lift to get underground. According to wikipedia, the Elbe Tunnel is 24 meters deep. Once you are down, you go out and you have the two tunnels in front of you. One is for pedestrians and another one for cars. The road is very narrow. just one car can go trough.

We rode our bycicles and we crossed the the Elbe Tunnel. According to wikipedia, the tunnel is almost 500 meters long. It is cold inside, I suggest you take a pullover when you visit the Elbe Tunnel.

At the end of the tunnel, you take again the lift up and you are on the other side of the Elbe. Ther is a very very nice terrace where you have a wonderful view of Hamburg and the port. I will post the photo tomorrow.
