Some weeks ago we decided to visit a photo exhibition at the Gruner un Jahr building here in Hamburg. As I mentioned in my previous posts, I believed that the building around the Portuguese Quarter (portugiesisch viertel) next to the Elbe and with the shape of a Ship, was where the Editorial Gruner un Jahr had their German offices. And I was not wrong.
You can see in the first photo above, the view of the building behind, from the point of view of the "Der Michel" church of the central offices of Gruner un Jahr (G+J) in Hamburg. The company belongs to Bertelsmann, one of the biggest media conglomerates in the world. Gruner und Jah, according to wikipedia, is the biggest and most important magazine publisher in Europe.
Bertelsmann is also behind RTL, one of the most important broadcasters in Germany, and, again, according to wikipedia, the most important of Europe. Random Hause, a book editorial is also part of Bertelsmann, and the conglomerate has important deals with Sony as well.
Gruner und Jahr is behind more than 250 magazines around the world and employs currently more than 12,000 people. The building that houses Gruner und Jahr is called "G+J-Pressehaus", and I could not find much information about the architect who designed it.
You might be thinking now: I have never heard of this editorial or company. Is Gruner und Jahr really that big? Take a look at the next photos, and you might find your favourite magazine produced by Gruner und Jahr or at least a magazine you are familiar with. The building of Gruner und Jahr is indeed interesting and the more you look at it the more is obvious the intention to make it look like a ship. Next time you visit Hamburg, don't miss and opportunity to visit the building of Gruner und Jahr, they might even have a photo exhibition that you can visit. And later you can have a galao at the Portuguese Quarter around the corner.
