Hamburg Port's Birthday or Hafengeburtstag

Last weekend was what each year the people of Hamburg celebrate in their Port: the Hafengeburtstag or the Birthday of the Port of Hamburg. The celebrations last 4 days in which around 1,5 millon people visit the port. We where there on sunday morning, and it was crowded.

Normally there is a program of the activities for the Hafengeburtstag for this days, which you can find in any tourist office in Hamburg. For example, each hour, there are air shows with old planes flying over the Elbe river. You can see some of the planes I managed to photograph under.

We went there to have breakfast at the Portuguese Quarter and then we walked along the Elbe, where all the amusements and stands of the Hafengeburtstag were. You can find stands selling beer of course, sausages of course, pickles (very tasty I can say!), smoked fish, German sweets, cocktails, more amusements, french fries dutch style, etc.

We visited then a Russian Ship that was anchored in the Port. Different from other ships that we did not visit, you had to pay 3 euro for visiting this ship. It was interesting though. You can see the photos under. Later there was yet another Russian ship anchored. Perhaps it had something to do with the Hafengeburtstag or perhaps it did not. (photos above)

Normally there is also a big firework display on one night of the Hafengeburtstag but we were not in the mood of watching it. We already saw several in Barcelona and in Las Fallas in Valencia. But perhaps it can of interest of you. Besides, fireworks are not allowed in Germany except on special ocassions such as the Hafengeburtstag or in New Years (Silvester).

At one stage of our visit, loads of small boats sailed along the Elbe and let go hundreds of small ballons and honked their horns. It was a nice spectacle. I am trying to upload a small video of this, let's see how it looks like.
