As everywhere in Europe, almost everybody in Hamburg is watching the Euro 2008 football championship in Austria and Switzerland. And when Portugal was playing we decided to visit the Portuguese quarter in Hamburg. Besides, a Portuguese friend of us is here in Hamburg to visit us and we wanted to show her the atmosphere of the area. She was surprised to see so many non-portuguese people (Germans mostly) with t-shirts of Portugal, flags, hats, etc.
The atmosphere was very nice, specially as Portugal defeated the Czech Republic. Sometimes it was raining a little bit, as the weather is not as good as it had been in the last days. But at the end it did not bother the celebration.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, I had a job interview in a very important company. One that it is 3 hours by train from here. More or less. I cannot tell you which one is as I would like to keep it secret until I know whether I am going to get the job or not. The only thing I can tell you is that I am very interested.
The problem is that it will be far from Hamburg and I will have to come each weekend to be with my wife. Mmm. But I honestly believe the job is worth some sacrifice. We have already talked about this, my wife and myself, and we agree we can give it a try. Let's see. Now, the celebration was nice and interesting. Our portuguese friend was translating some of the comments of the people around us to us. And she told us as well about one woman who was all dressed with the colours of Portugal and that I was sure she was Brazilian that she was from one of the excolonies from Portugal in Africa. I am aware of the fact of the colonies, but it never crossed my mind that she could have been African. Always when I see someone black speaking in Portuguese I instantly think s/he is from Brazil.
And besides Portugal, the Turkish also celebrate big in Hamburg when Turkey won; yesterday some Croatians were celebrating yesterday; and some more immigrants that live here in Hamburg as well. Very interesting and nice as well. The Germans on the other hand, had something to celebrate after their first game, but yesterday the lost against Croatia. I would like to see Germany winning to experience the atmosphere here in Hamburg of Germans celebrating.
Finally, here is a video of the celebration of Portugal:

Hello!
I'm portuguese and I'm I'm moving to Hamburg in August.
I've already been there in past March and visited the portuguese quarter. It's very nice!
Thank you for the photos.
About portuguese speaking people. Once, in England, someoneheard me speaking portuguese and we had this interesting dialog "Are you russian? No,I'm portuguese... Oh, from Brazil?! No, from Portugal! Oh, that's Spain!"
Well, I had to explain that Portugal is in Europe and Brazil is across the ocean. And that Portugal is not a spanish region, it's independent from Spain since 1143! It was funny!
Good luck with the job! Hope you get it!
I'm looking for a job too.
Thanks for your comments.
And about your experience in London. I know the feeling. But then you find people who are the opposite and they know more about your country, your food, your musicians, your culture, etc. And it is great to talk to this kind of people.
I have seen some jobs where they look for Portuguese speaking people in Hamburg. It is the companies owned by Portuguese that import products from Portugal to sell here in Hamburg.
You could give it a try in this area. Good luck and welcome to Hamburg!!
Moin moin! :)
Hello again!
Thank you for your tip!
Maybe there's something interesting for me in those portuguese companies.
At the moment I'm applying to Sprachenschulen as an english teacher. I'm not a native english speaker, but I have a degree in portuguese and english teaching and I'm an experienced elementary school teacher. So, maybe someone will hire me...I hope!
I have a huge handicap: I can’t speak german at all! I've studied german some years ago, but I forgot it. I can understand almost everything but speaking german is hard word for me.
So I'll have to study german and work at the same time.
It would be nice if I could do it at the same place!
Oh well, we’ll see…
Thank you for your postings. Your blog is very nice and useful.
